Dril-Quipa prestigious U.S. firm specializing in the manufacture of equipment for the offshore energy sector, has been chosen to supply the subsea wellhead systems for Woodside Energy’s Trion project in Mexican waters. This project represents a significant advance in the development of offshore energy resources.
Initiated with a strategic vision, the Trion project is a completely new initiative in the field of deepwater exploration. By implementing an ambitious plan that includes the drilling of 24 wells distributed in two different stages, an important event for the energy sector.
New systems for Woodside’s Trion project

BigBore IIe systems are recognized for their proven sealing capability and robustness, with an exceptional locking potential of 2 MM lb, making them an ideal tool for the industry.
This system introduces a significant improvement by eliminating the need for locking sleeves in both the drilling stages of the drilling and production and production stages. From an implementation perspective, Dril-Quip’s facilities located in Villahermosa, Mexico, will play an essential role in supporting the Trion project.
Strategic support from Dril Quip
Highlighting the importance of strategic alliances, Don Underwood, Vice President of Subsea Products at Dril-Quip, expressed his satisfaction with the company’s participation in this landmark project with Woodside. The collaboration is seen as a reflection of Dril-Quip’s commitment to innovation and its contribution to the energy industry in Mexico.
June 2023, Woodside Energymade the final investment decision to move forward with the Trion project, reaffirming its leadership position with a 60% stake, while PEMEX, the Mexican state-owned company, retains the remaining 40%. This decision marks a step forward in the consolidation of the project.
Development of the Trion field is envisioned through a floating production unit (FPU) with the impressive capacity to process up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day. This approach demonstrates the scale and ambition of the project.
Favorable projections in crude oil exploitation
In addition, the FPU will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea and will be linked to a floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel, which will have a capacity of 950,000 barrels of oil. Gate Energy has been the company selected to carry out the commissioning of the Trion FPU, ensuring an efficient integration of the project components.
This project is located at a depth of 2,500 meters and about 180 kilometers off the Mexican coast, near the maritime border with the United States, as a strategic location for the exploitation of deepwater energy resources.
Finally, it is anticipated that the first oil from the Trion project will be extracted in 2028, setting a precedent for deepwater oil production in Mexico and strengthening the country’s position in the global energy sector.
