Electrain collaboration with Flyvis exploring the still existing demand for more conventional electric aircraft with its hybrid-electric short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft, which promises to carry nine passengers, a pilot and luggage up to 805 km at a cruising speed of approximately 322 km/h (200 mph).
Design and operation of Electra’s STOL aircraft
This STOL aircraft will use eight electric propellers on the leading edge of the wings and large flaps on the trailing edges to create an aerodynamic effect of “blown lift” so powerful that it will allow takeoff at speeds of only 56 km/h (35 mph).
In addition, the aircraft’s innovative design allows it to accelerate to this takeoff speed quickly, meaning it can operate on runways smaller than a soccer field. Electra claims that its aircraft will be able to operate from airfields as small as 92 x 31 m and suggests that it could even land on the roof of some buildings. Although these aircraft will not offer as many operating locations as eVTOLs, their flexibility remains remarkably high.
In addition, investors are excited to note that this aircraft performs largely like a conventional aircraft, meaning that the path to certification and commercial deployment should be more straightforward and easier to navigate, with many precedents and fewer unknowns compared to the teams of eVTOL.
It is important to note that Electra has already conducted test flights with a two-seat prototype in November and will continue flight testing while working on a full-scale, nine-seat prototype that is scheduled to fly in 2026.
The company is targeting certification and entry into service by 2028.
Thats not all! It appears that the market is paying attention, as Electra has received pre-orders for more than 2,000 aircraft, valued at more than $8 billion. This far exceeds the largest pre-seller in the eVTOL field, Vertical Aerospace, which has pre-sold 1,500 aircraft for a total of more than $5 billion.
