Port to be converted into floating offshore wind energy center

The Port of Castellón (PortCastelló) is preparing for a significant transformation with the goal of becoming a floating offshore wind energy hub in the Mediterranean.

This initiative not only seeks to diversify the port’s activities, but also to increase its sustainability, taking advantage of its previous experience in handling both onshore and offshore wind material and the availability of space to store such material.

Rubén Ibáñez, president of the Port Authority of Castellón, pointed out that PortCastelló stands out for being the port with the largest area available for the reception of new companies in the Mediterranean arc, which positions it favorably for this development.

The new floating offshore wind energy center

PortCastelló’s commitment to floating offshore wind floating offshore wind energy will not only generate import and export traffic, with the need to import components for assembly prior to shipment to final destinations, but also aligns with the objectives of the European Union. The EU has set itself the target that, by 2030, at least 45% of its energy should come from renewable sources, and offshore wind energy will play a crucial role in achieving this goal. This responds both to the need to decarbonize electricity production and to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian hydrocarbons.

It is worth noting that Europe aims to reach at least 111 GW of installed capacity in offshore wind energy by 2030, which represents a significant increase over initial targets. Northern European countries have announced plans to increase their wind power production capacity up to tenfold by 2050 and projects under construction in Japan, Taiwan, France, and Norway show the global expansion of the industry. Spain joins this strategy, as reflected in its offshore wind and marine energy roadmap.

Projections for PortCastelló

Ibanez noted that ports will play a key role in the growth of the offshore wind market, especially due to the long blade lengths of offshore wind turbines, which now exceed 200 meters in diameter. PortCastelló is seeking to position itself in this emerging market and plans to expand the surface area of its dock according to its master plan, which will provide more than 450,000m2 for new traffic.

Likewise, the Port Authority of Castellón will show its commitment to this sector by participating in Wind Europe 2024 in Bilbao, a fair that will attract more than 15,000 professional visitors and more than 500 exhibitors. The objective is to strengthen commercial and networking relationships with professionals in the wind industry to increase the visibility of PortCastelló and consolidate it as a future offshore wind energy center in the Mediterranean.

Floating offshore wind energy represents a significant advance in the search for sustainable solutions for energy production. Unlike fixed wind turbines, which require installation in shallow seabeds, floating wind turbines can be located in deeper waters, opening up new areas for renewable energy generation.

Investment in research and development is crucial to overcome the technical and economic challenges associated with this innovative form of power generation, ensuring its long-term viability and efficiency.
