Minestoa leading developer of ocean energy, announced that it has reached a crucial milestone: its Dragon 12 tidal power plantThe 1.2 MW plant, with a capacity of 1.2 MW, has been successfully commissioned and in the early hours of February 9, it began supplying electricity to the national grid of the Faroe Islands.

About Dragon 12 Tidal Power Plant

Dragon 12Minesto’s first MW-scale tidal power comet, Dragon 12, has been successfully commissioned and has generated electricity at satisfactory levels in its first phase of operation. This 12-meter wide, 28-ton underwater kite, anchored to the seabed, moves along a figure-eight flight path driven by tidal flow.

Importantly, this plant represents a ten-fold scale-up in size (from the existing 100 kW Dragon 4) and offers competitive performance and cost levels for the development of large-scale commercial subsea farms of tidal power plants.

This is a great day for Minesto. We have reached the most significant milestone in the company’s history by producing electricity for the grid with our megawatt-scale power plant. We are proud and happy and, more than ever, we look forward to the road ahead.“, said Dr. Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto.

What the Minesto team has achieved today is extraordinary and sets a new agenda for renewable energy development in many areas of the world. Dragon 12’s competitiveness is clear; it is powerful, cost-effective and delivers predictable electricity to the grid.“said Dr. Martin Edlund.

The importance of innovation in tidal energy

The commissioning of the Dragon 12 tidal power plant by Minesto not only represents a significant technical achievement, but also underlines the importance of continuous innovation in the renewable energy sector.

Tidal energy, one of the most predictable and consistent sources of renewable energy, offers enormous potential to contribute to the global energy matrix in a sustainable manner. However, its exploitation has been limited due to technical and economic challenges. Initiatives such as Minesto’s demonstrate how technological innovation can overcome these obstacles, paving the way for greater adoption of this clean energy source.

As the world seeks to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, tidal power is emerging as a vital component in the transition to a greener, more sustainable energy future. Investment in research and development, along with government policy support, will be key to unlocking the full potential of tidal energy. tidal energy and securing its place in the energy landscape of the future.
