New phase of offshore wind energy auctions

In a significant step towards advancing renewable energy sources , the Japanese government has launched the third phase of auctions to select developers for two new offshore wind energy areas in the northern region of Japan.

These areas, with a combined total capacity of 1.05 GW represent a notable increase in renewable energy generation capacity in Japan.

The first location, with a production potential of 600 MW, is located off the southern coast of the Sea of Japan, in the vicinity of the cities of Tsugaru and Ajigasawa, in Aomori prefecture. The second site, with a capacity of 450 MW, is located off the coast of Yamagata Prefecture, near the city of Yuza. These areas, designated as “promotion areas” in October, are earmarked for the development of fixed-bottom wind farms and are expected to come online in the mid-2030s.

The auction winners

The winners of the auction will obtain the rights to exploit these marine areas for a maximum period of three decades. The auction process is projected to conclude on July 19, with results anticipated to be announced in December.

This initiative is aligned with Japan’s broader strategy to encourage the development of offshore wind farms , set out in a law enacted in 2019. Such legislation aimed to support up to 10 GW of offshore wind project capacity by 2030, with a substantial 30 to 45 GW by 2040. This reflects Japan’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Importantly, these auctions represent a significant milestone in Japan’s journey towards renewable energy and pave the way for further diversification of energy sources, decreasing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.

This move is expected to attract significant investments, contribute to Japan’s transition to sustainable energy and play a crucial role in the global fight against climate change.
