New green hydrogen plant
H2 Energy Europe , a developer of hydrogen systems in Europe, has received environmental approval for its large-scale hydrogen production plant in Esbjerg, Denmark. This approval, allowing for 1 GW electrolysis capacity, represents a significant milestone that brings the project closer to final investment decision (FDI).
According to H2 Energy Europe, the proposed plant will play a key role in the decarbonization of heavy industry and road transport, while it will become a chemical raw material for the production of sustainable electronic fuels such as methanol and ammonia, thus promoting the ecological transition in Europe.
In addition to generating approximately 60 permanent jobs and up to 700 during the construction phase, the facility will also generate CO2 -neutral surplus heat, with the potential to provide sustainable district heating to the majority of homes in Esbjerg.
Jesper Frost Rasmussen, Mayor of Esbjerg Municipality, has highlighted the importance of the environmental approval granted to H2 Energy Europe’s future hydrogen plant for Esbjerg’s position as one of Europe’s leading sustainable business cities.
“H2 Energy Europe will play a key role in attracting more companies in the Power-to-X (PtX) sector to Esbjerg. However, there remains a need to clarify the location of the hydrogen pipeline and its planned establishment, which are critical to the realization of a strong hydrogen industry in Denmark. We hope that these issues will be resolved very soon, to continue advancing the region’s green energy ambitions.“Rasmussen explained.
For his part, Mark Pedersen, COO of H2 Energy Europe, stated: “Our top priority is the safety of our operations. Achieving environmental approval for a project of this magnitude and at such an early stage of the year highlights our commitment to ensuring the well-being of our community. It also reflects the support and future vision of the municipality of Esbjerg. We are deeply grateful for your cooperation and shared vision in making this project a reality.“.
Although the approval marks a significant step for Denmark in leading Power-to-X technology, H2 Energy Europe is aware of the challenges it faces. The proposed pipeline, scheduled for completion in 2028, is of crucial importance as it will play a vital role in distributing the green hydrogen produced by the facility to other European countries, strengthening the Danish economy, the company said.
