The American Petroleum Institute (API) reported the release of the fifth edition of Recommended Practice (RP) 572 , which addresses Inspection Practices for Pressure Vessels.
API: New edition of RP 572
This new edition was introduced as a supplement to API 510, the Pressure Vessel Inspection Code, which focuses on the inspection, classification, repair and in-service alteration of such vessels, providing additional details on inspection practices applicable to a variety of pressure vessels used in the chemical and hydrocarbon industries.
In line with the principles established by API 510, the fifth edition of RP 572 provides a comprehensive view of the design and construction of pressure vessels . Additionally, it covers key aspects such as inspection planning processes, inspection frequency, inspection and evaluation methods, repair procedures, and record-keeping protocols.
Likewise, the document highlights the importance of safety precautions and points out the limitations inherent to the various inspection methods.
Regarding safety, the fifth edition has focused on two fundamental areas: the safety of personnel operating in proximity to pressure vessels and the safety of pressure vessel inspectors.
It should be noted that this fifth edition not only updates the essential elements of the content, but also integrates information on new technologies. It also adds and rearranges material to align with other API standards and recommended practices.
Finally, it provides guidance for the analysis of integrity reports and adjusts their content to more effectively align with RP 574, Inspection Practices for Piping System Components.
The Fifth Edition of RP 572 serves as a foundational resource for the API 510 Individual Certification Program (ICP) and the API Process Safety Site Assessment Program (PSSAP®). As a complement to API 510, RP 572 is considered essential for those seeking API 510 certification and aspiring to fulfill roles as pressure vessel inspectors.
