The partnership between JAC Motors and Volkswagen has led to the launch of the world’s first electric vehicle powered by a sodium-ion battery. This innovative sodium-powered car marks a fundamental change in the electric vehicle industry, providing a more affordable alternative to lithium-ion batteries, the costs of which have seen a significant increase.

Hua Xianzi: the first sodium-powered car

The car, named Hua Xianzi (flower fairy), is a five-seater model powered by a 25 kWh Na-ion battery supplied by HiNa Battery Technologies. Thanks to this battery, the vehicle can achieve a range of up to 250 km on a single charge.

It should be noted that although sodium-ion batteries have a lower energy density compared to lithium-ion batteries, they offer benefits such as better performance at low temperatures, faster charging speed, longer life and a lower propensity for overheating. In October, the vehicle received official approval from Chinese regulators.

Another important aspect is that these batteries not only reduce the manufacturing costs of electric vehicles by 10%, but also constitute a significant advance in terms of safety, reliability and efficiency. Karl-Heinz Göbel, CEO of JAC South Africa, highlights that this technology will help make the prices of electric vehicles more competitive and accessible to a greater number of buyers.

With almost six decades of experience, JAC Motors stands out in the Chinese automotive industry and is expanding its presence in the South African market. The company manufactures cars, vans and trucks for left- and right-hand drive markets, and its marketing network spans more than 130 countries, including 28 in Africa.

This joint breakthrough between JAC Motors and Volkswagen not only marks a milestone in battery innovation for electric vehicles, but also promises a revolution in the accessibility and sustainability of electric vehicles around the world.
