Gasunie has started construction of a hydroduct network aimed at connecting major industrial users in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium to hydrogen storage facilities and international hydrogen supply lines.

This extensive hydrogen network will extend over 1,200 km and for the most part will consist of the adaptation of gas pipelines that until now were used to transport natural gas.

Likewise, the network will connect with large-scale hydrogen production facilities and import terminals located in seaports, such as the port of Rotterdam, where the arrival of the hydrogen is expected from 2027. green hydrogen produced by Cepsa, using energy vectors such as ammonia or methanol, in the Andalusian Valley of Green Hydrogen.

It is important to mention that in June of last year, Cepsa and Gasunie established a collaboration with the purpose of promoting the first green hydrogen maritime corridor between two of the most prominent ports in Europe: Rotterdam and Algeciras.

The journey of green hydrogen

The green hydrogen, generated by Cepsa in southern Spain, will be transported through this corridor to Rotterdam. At the Port of Rotterdam, green hydrogen will be distributed through the Gasunie hydrogen network to contribute to the decarbonization of major industrial areas in central and northern Europe.

In the development of this green hydrogen corridor and its related products, Cepsa has also established strategic partnerships with the Norwegian company Yara Clean Ammonia and ACE Terminal, a consortium made up of the companies Gasunie, HES International and Vopak.

After the opening ceremony of this large facility, which was presided over by the King of the Netherlands, William Alexander, the Director of Strategy and Transformation of Cepsa’s Clean Energy business, Rik Sneep, highlighted that this network of hydroducts will have an essential function in facilitating the transport of green hydrogen from Cepsa’s highly competitive production areas in southern Spain to the concentrated energy-intensive industrial clusters in northern Europe, once it arrives at the Port of Rotterdam.

Furthermore, the director of the Spanish energy company highlighted the importance of, in addition to the creation of green hydrogen production capacity, having “the timely availability of receiving infrastructure”. “Together we are building a strong green hydrogen economy in Europe to accelerate the decarbonisation of the entire continent“, said.
