Located in the heart of the METRO LOGISTICS logistics complex in Germany, this solar photovoltaic installation (covering an area equivalent to 14 football fields) represents an important milestone in the transition towards more environmentally friendly energy sources. The project was carried out by the real estate company Goodman in collaboration with BayWa re, a firm widely recognized for its experience in renewable energy.

The alliance formed by Goodman, BayWa re and METRO demonstrates a joint commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change. This impressive solar plant, located in the city of Marl, consists of two sections: one with a capacity of 6 MWp and another in an adjacent building with a capacity of 12 MWp, making it the largest installation of this type in German territory.
Both sections house 43,000 solar panels with a total capacity of 18 MWp, representing a significant step towards the adoption of cleaner energy sources and supporting the climate goals of the Government of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The amount of energy generated will be able to cover all the operational needs of METRO LOGISTICS and any surplus will be injected into the area’s electrical grid. In addition, this complex has been awarded the Gold Certificate awarded by the German Sustainable Construction Council (DGNB). METRO LOGISTICS benefits from Goodman’s experience in the real estate field and BayWare’s knowledge in the field of renewable energy .

For METRO, a leading company in the distribution sector, climate change represents a challenge in multiple aspects, ranging from the modernization of systems to the adoption of electric vehicles and the installation of solar panels. According to Christiane Giesen from METRO AG.: “The solar project in Marl reinforces our climate commitment. METRO aspires to carbon neutrality by 2040, and we are confident of achieving it with quality collaborators and appropriate policies.”
For her part, Mona Neubaur, authority of North Rhine-Westphalia, inaugurated the plant and noted: “This facility in Marl is a collaborative model for the energy of the future, accelerating the adoption of solar in our region. “Affordable and local energy is essential to our goal of being an emissions-neutral industrial zone in Europe.”
