Inspenet CEO, Francesco Solari, had the opportunity to interview engineer Gustavo Romero, president of AMPP Capítulo México and director for Latin America for Penspen, at the LatinCORR & InterCorr 2023. During the interview, Romero shared his valuable insights on the future of the corrosion industry and the importance of education for the next generation of professionals.

A successful LatinCORR & InterCorr 2023 and a promising future for Corrosion 2024

Romero highlighted the success of LatinCORR & InterCorr 2023, an event that brought together corrosion experts from across Latin America to discuss the latest advances in the prevention, control, and performance of materials. “This event has been a watershed moment compared to what we had seen before, as all areas of corrosion have been touched upon,” he said.

Looking to the future, Romero noted that the Corrosion 2024 event in New Orleans will be a major milestone for the industry. “It is the largest event that AMPP has globally and an excellent opportunity for everyone to participate,” he said.

Addressing the challenges of the energy transition

On the challenges and opportunities presented by the energy transition, Romero said: “Corrosion is a natural process that will always be present, even in the case of non-metals. Therefore, I am sure that AMPP will be prepared to offer technologies, methodologies, and solutions to help mitigate, prevent, and live with it.”

Education and technology: keys to the future

Romero also addressed the importance of education and technology in the future of the industry. “New training programs are already including digital topics,” he said. “New engineers need to be able to handle tools like Power BI, software as a service, and the Digital Twin to succeed in the hyperconnectivity era.”

Encouraging student participation

On AMPP student chapters, Romero highlighted their growth and the importance of encouraging student participation. “Students are the future of AMPP and it is essential that they get involved in the organization,” he said.
