From Villahermosa, Mexico, during the IMCORRS 2023 conference, Francesco Solari CEO Inspenet , had the honor of interviewing Kevin Carranza, Multiphase Measurement Technologies Specialist at Emerson.

Carranza presented an innovative solution from Emerson : non-intrusive wireless ultrasonic sensors designed to monitor the thickness of pipes and ducts, allowing to calculate corrosion rates and the useful life of these assets. These sensors use EMAT technology (electromagnetic acoustic transducers) and come from the United Kingdom, under the Emerson PermaSense brand. Kevin highlighted that the product has been well received, especially in old refineries and in the Mexican Offshore industry.

The product can operate in temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius, depending on the transducer, and in pipe diameters ranging from 4 to 40 inches. Additionally, the sensors include a thermocouple for real-time temperature compensation.

The sensors transmit information wirelessly to a gateway via the Industrial Wireless Hard protocol, and the data can be integrated into software such as UltraPipe and Meridian . Kevin stressed that today’s crude oil is more aggressive, so having real-time monitoring is essential to prevent tragedies and losses.

Finally, Carranza mentioned that Emerson seeks to help operators invest more in sustainability and climate change with these types of solutions.
