As part of an event for women in the tank industry at NISTM 2025, Women in the Tanks Industry (WITI), the Inspenet team was able to talk with Teresa A. Valdez, National Distribution Sales Manager for North America at Hempel, who shared her insights on the role of women in a still male-dominated industry.
Experience opens doors, knowledge keeps them open
Teresa has accumulated more than two decades of experience in the field of corrosion protection. She explains that the biggest challenge has been to have the necessary knowledge to speak with propriety about asset protection. She acknowledges that women face the prejudice of not being taken seriously, so mastering technical concepts and being aware of corrosion failures, technologies and market solutions is key to positioning oneself.
In her professional journey, Teresa has learned that respect in this environment is not given, it is earned. Her advice to young women who want to enter sectors such as energy or industry is to be persistent, learn, evolve and make a difference. This is not only based on motivation, but also on a clear commitment to continuous training as a way to stand out and stay relevant.

Hempel and his drive for technically based equity
The multinational company, which specializes in sustainable coatings solutions, not only promotes female leadership, but also bases it on knowledge. The company has understood that diversity in its teams is not only an ethical issue, but a strategic advantage that enriches its solutions and strengthens decision-making. Teresa sees a positive change in the sector, as the female presence is no longer exceptional and companies are beginning to value talent over gender.
Hempel is very much diversified, and they see the value that we bring the knowledge and the technology and the fact that we are able to kind of hold our own ground. […] I see a wave of change within the industry where women are being more recognized for our knowledge and our participation.
Teresa A. Valdez.
An industry that is beginning to listen with different ears
Hempel has understood that building a brighter, more sustainable future also requires opening the doors of knowledge and leadership to all voices. Inclusion is not a gesture, it is an active policy that translates into opportunities, representation and joint growth.
