Electric vehicle brand Zeekr has taken a step forward in the industry with its new “golden battery,” a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that can charge from 10% to 80% in just nine minutes . This technology redefines charging times and brings electric vehicles closer to the refueling speed of an internal combustion car.

The golden battery was charged in record time

The Zeekr 7X SUV , equipped with the aforementioned battery and an 800V electrical system, has successfully replicated in real-world tests the laboratory results obtained in 2023. In a demonstration, the 75 kWh battery was fully charged in 19 minutes , with a record time of just nine minutes to reach 80% of its capacity.

These results position it as one of the electric vehicles with the fastest charging in the world.

To demonstrate the technology’s effectiveness, YouTube channel Out of Spec Reviews showed off the tests. In the video, the LFP battery is shown being fully discharged before being plugged into Zeekr’s proprietary public charging socket and recharging to 100% in 19 minutes .

Zeekr’s 840kW charger, one of the most powerful available, far outperforms current public chargers, which range from 350 to 400kW. During testing, charging speeds started at 200kW and peaked at 460kW, while maintaining an average of 400kW.

More autonomy in less time

Thanks to this innovation, the Zeekr 7X adds approximately 34 kilometers of range per minute of charging. In practical terms, with just four minutes plugged in, a driver could recover up to 137 kilometers of range, a significant improvement in the daily usability of electric vehicles.

Zeekr is also expanding its ultra-fast charging infrastructure. By the end of 2023, it had 401 stations in China and plans to reach 10,000 charging points by 2026.

With these advances, Zeekr challenges traditional manufacturers and showcases China’s capabilities in developing storage and charging technologies. However, due to trade restrictions, consumers in Western markets may not be able to access this technology in the short term.
