The Yunlin offshore wind farm , located in the Taiwan Strait, is now operating at its full capacity of 640 MW after the successful connection of its 80 turbines to the electricity grid . This project is key to the growth of renewable energy in the region and strengthens the transition towards a more sustainable energy model.

Strategic location and connectivity of the wind farm

The park is located between 8 and 17 km off the west coast of Taiwan and covers an area of 82 km² with turbines installed in water depths of between 7 and 35 meters . The electricity generated is fed into the grid through two substations located in Yunlin County, facilitating the stable supply of clean energy to businesses and households.

With an estimated annual generation of 2,400 GWh, the Yunlin wind farm will power more than 600,000 Taiwanese households , reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 1.2 million metric tons each year. Its development is part of Taiwan’s goal of achieving 5.7 GW of offshore wind power by 2025.

Leading companies promote the project

The wind farm has been developed by a consortium of companies led by Tianfeng New Energy, with support from TotalEnergies , Electricity Generating Public Company (EGCO) and Sojitz Corporation. Tianfeng New Energy led the construction phase and will continue to manage certain aspects of the project, while TotalEnergies will take control of the technical operation once it enters commercial operation in June 2025.

The project was financed by an international syndicate of banks and export credit agencies, highlighting the global interest in the expansion of offshore wind energy . TotalEnergies’ Vice President of Renewables said that this project demonstrates the commitment to the energy transition and the reduction of emissions at a global level.

With this breakthrough, Yunlin becomes a key pillar of Taiwan’s energy future, consolidating offshore wind energy as a viable solution for a clean and sustainable electricity supply .
