Yara International announces the official inauguration of its renewable hydrogen and ammonia plant. With the start-up of this facility, the company will begin distributing the first tons of fertilizers derived from the renewable ammonia produced.

The renewable hydrogen and ammonia plant

In a ceremony led by the Norwegian Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, the Norwegian renewable hydrogen plant was inaugurated. renewable hydrogen plant, located in the Herøya industrial park, was inaugurated. This is currently the largest facility of its kind in Europe. The plant uses water electrolysis powered by renewable energy to produce hydrogen, replacing natural gas as a feedstock and reducing the site’s CO2 emissions by 41,000 tons per year.

According to Svein Tore Holsether, president and CEO of Yara, “This is crucial both for Yara and for the decarbonization of the food value chain, fuel transportation and other energy-intensive industries. This innovative project is a reflection of our mission to feed the world responsibly and protect the planet.“.

The low carbon footprint fertilizers produced at this plant will be part of the new portfolio called Yara Climate Choice In addition to fertilizers produced by water electrolysis, Yara’s future services will include other low-carbon ammonia-based fertilizers produced by carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.

Hans Olav Raen, CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia, said, “We are very pleased with the results.renewable ammonia is essential for decarbonization, although developing it at scale takes time. Looking ahead to 2030, we are also working on low-carbon ammonia production using CCS, promoting the hydrogen economy and developing markets for low-emission ammonia.“.

Last 2023, Yara signed a landmark CO₂ transport and storage agreement with Northern Lights, the world’s first cross-border CCS agreement. The Yara company plans to reduce its annual CO₂ emissions by 800,000 tons thanks to ammonia production at its Yara Sluiskil plant.

The hydrogen produced in this plant is used to generate ammonia, which is used in the production of fertilizers and as a fuel for maritime transportation. In addition, ammonia acts as an efficient carrier of energy and hydrogen.
