Swiss company WinGD has announced the availability of its “X-DF-P” option, which enables ammonia-optimized engines to run on liquefied petroleum gas ( LPG ). This development opens up new possibilities for vessels under construction preparing for the ammonia trade.
WinGD preset increases flexibility in engines
From 2027, the company will deliver these X-DF-A engines with LPG preparations . According to Sebastian Hensel, Vice President R&D at WinGD, the decision is a strategic response to market uncertainties related to the balance between ammonia and LPG. This “pre-tuning” allows operators to plan their transition to more sustainable fuels with greater confidence.
The injection system of the X-DF-A engines requires only minor modifications to switch between LPG and ammonia. This flexibility is vital as the global ammonia trade, aided by its potential as an energy carrier, continues to expand. Furthermore, Hensel underlined the positive acceptance that the X-DF-A ammonia engine has had among bulk carrier and gas carrier operators.
The engine design follows standards that optimise both efficiency and safety when using alternative fuels. In addition, the engine sizes contemplated are suitable for large commercial vessels, ensuring that the solution is compatible with the current demands of the maritime and energy sectors.
