Six leading companies in the aeronautics industry have joined forces to explore the creation of the first airport hydrogen hub in Spain. Airbus, Aena, Air Nostrum, Iberia, Exolum and Repsol are collaborating on this ambitious project, marking a breakthrough by addressing the key challenges to implementing hydrogen-powered aviation in Spain. hydrogen-powered aviation in the country.

This initiative represents the first comprehensive collaboration that encompasses the entire value chain, from primary power generation to airport ground operations, involving two airlines and a complete network of airport facilities simultaneously.

Hydrogen hub partnership

The collaboration will not only focus on hydrogen supply and infrastructure, but also on specific requirements for ground operations within Spanish airports. The main objective is to facilitate and support the growth of the hydrogen-powered aviation ecosystem in the country. is to facilitate and support the growth of the hydrogen-powered aviation ecosystem in the country by providing partners with a comprehensive view on the integration of hydrogen-powered aircraft into the airport environment. “At Airbus, the decarbonization of aviation is a key priority, and the deployment of hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft and associated infrastructure is critical. Given Spain’s considerable capacity in renewable energy and low-carbon hydrogen production, it is essential that the aviation industry collaborates to ensure a sustainable supply chain to airports,” said Karine Guenan, vice president of the ZEROe ecosystem at Airbus.

Aena, for its part, highlighted the importance of this collaboration to better understand the future supply of hydrogen in Spanish airports, thus establishing a roadmap to address the challenges involved in the introduction of this new energy vector in the airport environment.

Business strategies towards decarbonization

María José Sanz of Air Nostrum underlined the regional airline’s commitment to the implementation of new technologies for the decarbonization of air transport, taking advantage of its size and flight profile to pioneer the adoption of hydrogen technology.

Teresa Parejo of Iberia highlighted the need for collaboration among all stakeholders to move towards decarbonization of the aviation sector, anticipating that hydrogen will complement the development of sustainable fuels in the future.

Exolum’s Andres Suarez emphasized the company’s commitment to the development of infrastructures that drive the energy transition and decarbonization of air mobility, particularly through the deployment of hydrogen as a future energy solution.

Luis de Oyarzabal of Repsol underlined the key role of renewable hydrogen in the company’s decarbonization strategy, envisioning its potential in both industrial applications and mobility, and the importance of collaborating with key partners to maximize this opportunity.

Airbus has launched the Hydrogen Hub at Airports program to promote the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure in aviation, with agreements already signed in 13 countries, including Spain and other major global markets.
