No more Facebook, now the company will be called Meta. Its founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the change of the corporate name of the company he founded 17 years ago.
According to Zuckerberg, Facebook is an iconic social media brand, but it doesn’t encompass everything they do. The founder and CEO of Meta said that the name was inspired by the Greek word meta, which means “beyond”. “For me, it symbolizes that there is always more to build.”
But what is the metaverse?
Facebook describes it as “a set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who are not in the same physical space as you.”
The metaverse would be a kind of augmented reality, where a person can send a holographic image of themselves to a concert with a friend attending in real life, work and meet with remote friends, or play immersive games.
Zuckerberg also announced that Messenger calls will come to virtual reality, his plans to transact in a virtual marketplace where virtual goods can be sold. This digital world would be accessed with a VR viewer and a 3D avatar, connecting all kinds of digital environments.
It is also creating virtual reality applications for social gatherings and the workplace, including those that allow you to interact with the real world.
