Vår Energi has confirmed a new oil discovery at the Countach well, located near the Goliat field in the Barents Sea. This oil exploration and production in the region is important, especially in a strategic area for the Norwegian Continental Shelf ( NCS ).

A discovery with potential in Campo Goliat

The Countach well has revealed preliminary gross recoverable resources of between 4 and 25 million barrels of oil equivalent ( mmboe ). This brings the total estimated recoverable resources in the area to between 10 and 55 mmboe. The discovery has confirmed the potential of the Goliath Range, and it is anticipated that further wells will be drilled to explore additional resources in this region. In fact, the planned drilling program for 2025 could identify additional prospective gross recoverable resources of over 100 mmboe.

The Norwegian oil company has found high-quality oil in the Kobbe formation, and although the Klappmyss formation presented lower-quality oil, its discovery creates new opportunities in the deeper sections of the Goliath Ridge.

We are very excited about this discovery and the new possibilities for future discoveries. Development of the fields around Goliat can unlock significant additional resources using existing infrastructure. “said Torger Rød, COO of Vår Energi.

Under a strategic collaboration with Equinor, Vår Energi plans to drill more than 20 exploration wells in the Barents Sea region over the next four years. This effort is part of the company’s plans to maintain stable production of 350,000 to 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The Countach appraisal well is the first in a two-year drilling campaign, with the aim of further evaluating the potential of the area.

Among the main participants in the project, Vår Energi operates the licence with a 65% stake, while Equinor holds the remaining 35%. The acquisition of new seismic data in 2025 is expected to improve the accuracy of future drilling.
