The recent launch of the new cable laying vessel Calypso is a sign of Van Oord ’s progress in the offshore wind industry. This specialised vessel operates in the Sofia offshore wind farm in the UK and is notable for its capabilities in HVDC cable installation and other related services.

The vessel is equipped with two cable carousels and has a capacity of up to 8,000 tonnes, and the Calypso has the ability to lay two DC cables simultaneously, increasing efficiency on large-scale projects.
The Calypso vessel’s advanced technology , including a hybrid system that allows it to operate on biofuel and is ready for e-fuels, reinforces the company’s commitment to sustainability. This vessel joins Nexus , another cable ship, thus consolidating the company’s position as a leader in the development of sustainable marine infrastructure.
The Sofia wind farm , located on Dogger Bank 195 kilometres off the north-east coast of the United Kingdom, is one of the largest projects in the global offshore wind sector. With a projected capacity of 1.4 GW, this facility will supply clean energy to more than one million homes in the country. The initiative is managed by the company, which leads the design, construction and installation of network cables, covering approximately 360 kilometres of cables at sea.
