A group of organizations linked to the oil industry have joined their agribusiness and biofuels peers for the first time in expressing their support for US legislation that would expand E15, a higher blend of ethanol and gasoline, to the entire country. reported Reuters.
According to the news agency, a number of organizations including the American Petroleum Institute (API), the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) and the National Farmers Union (NFU) wrote to congressional leaders urging them to adopt legislation that it would effectively lift restrictions on E15 sales.
API’s support is a victory for biofuel and agricultural groups because the oil industry has at times resisted efforts to expand the ethanol market.
The regulations against emissions of the US Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA restricts sales of E15 during the summer, although research has shown that the higher percentage blend may not increase emissions relative to the 10% blend called E10 now sold throughout the year.
Reuters reported this month that API began cooperating with the biofuels trade group after governors of major Midwestern corn-producing states petitioned the EPA to allow expanded sales of E15 in their states. The governors’ proposal raised concerns from the oil industry about fuel regulations that differ from state to state.
