Uniper, one of Europe’s leading energy companies, has inaugurated a new green hydrogen storage facility in Krummhörn, Lower Saxony. This project, known as the Hydrogen Pilot Cavern (HPC), is one of the first of its kind in the world and symbolizes Uniper’s commitment to the transition to a more sustainable energy supply.

The HPC pilot module has a volume of approximately 3,000 cubic meters and was constructed by solution mining in an existing well. During the inauguration, Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, highlighted the importance of hydrogen storage in stabilizing energy supply, especially in a context of increasing dependence on renewable energies. Furthermore, Lower Saxony’s Minister of Economics, Olaf Lies, highlighted the region’s role in the energy transition, underlining Krummhörn’s proximity to the North Sea and its connection to the existing energy infrastructure infrastructure.

The Krummhörn HPC project has a major local impact, and is also part of a broader vision to make Lower Saxony a hub of the hydrogen economy in Europe. Uniper plans to expand storage capacity at Krummhörn and other sites to 600 GWh by 2030, making a significant contribution to decarbonization and energy security on the continent.
