The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Dongguan Technological University of China (DGUT) signed an agreement to start the International Collaborative Doctorate Program to accompany students from both countries in their training to graduate degrees in engineering and science.
This is the first agreement of its kind for UNAM with a higher education institution in China; while for the DGUT it is the first with one from Ibero-America at the postgraduate level, they explained during the signing of the document carried out simultaneously in the Rectory Tower, in Mexico City, and in the Center for Mexican Studies UNAM-China located in the Asian nation.
Through the Program, other areas of collaboration will be explored, in order to increase academic exchange and joint teaching and research projects, as with other academic institutions in the eastern country.
UNAM students will have advisors from both universities in the area of thesis co-direction. The first year they will study at the National University, two years at the DGUT in China and the last in Mexico, obtaining a doctor’s degree from the Mexican institution.
It is worth mentioning that the DGUT, in addition to allowing access to its laboratories, will award 12 biannual scholarships over the next four years and accommodation in a university residence; the first students enrolled are expected to start in the 2023-2 semester.
Minlin Yang, vice president of Dongguan University of Technology (DGUT), explained that the institution has the support of Yang Cheng Ning, Nobel Prize in Physics 1957 and honorary president of that house of studies; In addition, it has two campuses, 1,800 professors and employees, and 20,000 students enrolled.
