A few weeks ago, Boston Dynamics introduced Sparkles, a “disguised” version of its well-known four-legged robot Spot. The design of this new furry robot dog transforms it into a friendly character, in order to generate a more pleasant experience for users.
The friendly robot Sparkles is wearing a costume that simulates blue fur with a few touches of glitter that encourages confidence and a desire to interact with him. This innovative approach coincided with the celebration of International Dance Day, highlighting its launch with a significant cultural touch.
Sparkles vs. Spot: the new furry robot dog
The difference is noticeable when comparing the reactions Sparkles elicits versus the standard version of Spot. Although the undisguised model is not perceived as intimidating, Sparkles, with his new image, becomes the center of attention, significantly improving perception and confidence towards him. This phenomenon underscores the importance of aesthetics in robotic technology and how it can influence social acceptance.
In the following video from Boston Dynamics you can see both versions of the robot interacting.

Undoubtedly, this blue furry robot raises new concerns, especially from a futuristic perspective, as robot designers may have to rethink their strategies to adopt forms that avoid commanding respect or fear.
Although the challenge is great, given that these are machines, a friendlier look and feel could be critical to getting more people to incorporate robots in their homes, workplaces workplaces or businesses.
