Some of the different combustion alternatives used in the automotive industry are still experimental and others have been around for many years. This time it is an engine that runs on liquid ammonia and although the idea is still subject to various opinions, it reveals a promising future.

Ammonia fueled engine: How does it work?

This new ammonia engine from Toyota and GAC was first shown at the annual exhibition of the Chinese manufacturer. It consists of a 2.0-liter engine with 161 hp and which, according to information, emits 90% less carbon dioxide than a gasoline one.

Although it is not the first time that an engine of this type has been worked on, since it has been explored as an alternative fuel in trucks and maritime transport, it is the first time that its use in passenger vehicles is being explored.

It is clear that using ammonia as a fuel source carries health risks, since exposure to a sufficient amount can be fatal, so both companies will have to pay special attention if they plan to mass-produce this propellant.

It will be necessary to give them the benefit of the doubt, however, some opinions against it have already come to light, such as that of BloombergNEF analyst Colin McKerracher, who assures that ammonia is hell to handle and cannot imagine seeing something like this in the passenger vehicles.
