TotalEnergies has signed a green hydrogen supply agreement with RWE to supply 30,000 tons of hydrogen annually to the Leuna refinery in Germany . This long-term agreement, which will extend for 15 years starting in 2030, marks a significant step forward in the decarbonization of the European energy sector.

The green hydrogen , produced using a 300 MW electrolyzer in Lingen, will be transported to the refinery via a 600-kilometer pipeline, contributing to the reduction of around 300,000 tons of CO₂ annually from the date of start of operations.

Strategic hydrogen supply for an energy future

The agreement underscores the potential of green hydrogen in the fight against climate change and strengthens the ties between TotalEnergies and RWE, two major players in the renewable energy sector. This agreement expands their collaboration, which already includes offshore wind projects in Germany and the Netherlands.

This contract is a key step in our mission to reduce CO₂ emissions at our European refineries. We are convinced that green hydrogen, supported by effective public policies, will be a fundamental part of our energy future.

“This is a significant step forward for TotalEnergies,” said Patrick Pouyanné, President and CEO of TotalEnergies.

Demand for green hydrogen is growing, and this agreement with TotalEnergies demonstrates that, with the right incentives, renewable hydrogen is a viable solution for the industry.

Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE, emphasized the importance of this agreement.

TotalEnergies and its commitment to decarbonization

The agreement with RWE aligns with TotalEnergies’ efforts to reduce its carbon footprint at its European refineries. The company has already signed contracts to supply more than 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to its facilities in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, with the goal of reducing its CO₂ emissions by three million tons annually by 2030.

This type of collaboration strengthens the role of hydrogen as a pillar of the energy transition both in Europe and globally, positioning companies like TotalEnergies and RWE as leaders in the fight for sustainability.
