Heerema Marine to install Sofia marine substation in the UK

Sofia offshore substation, one of the most ambitious projects in the North Sea North Seais preparing for a major milestone in its development. In the coming days, the semi-submersible crane vessel Sleipnir, operated by Heerema Marine Contractors, will sail to the project site to install the HVDC (high voltage direct current) marine conversion platform .

The Sleipnir, renowned for its ability to perform heavy lift operations in challenging environments, is scheduled to begin work today. The vessel, which is currently in the Dutch field N05-Awill be responsible for installing both the piles and the deck base, as well as the top of the converter platform, crucial components for the offshore substation.

Developed by RWE, the Sofia offshore wind farm is located on Dogger Bank, approximately 195 km off the northeast coast of the United Kingdom. With an installed capacity of 1.4 GW, this farm will have 100 SG 14-222 DD wind turbines, 44 of which will be equipped with recyclable blades.

The project is significant for its scale and the advanced technology it incorporates. Heerema Marine Contractors, in partnership with Sembcorp Marine, will be responsible for the installation under a contract it won in 2021.

Sofia will be operational in 2026

The Sofia offshore wind farm is expected to be operational in 2026, making a significant contribution to clean energy production in Europe.
