The remains of the Titan , the submersible that imploded on June 18 with five people on board while descending in search of the remains of the Titanic, were brought yesterday to the port of Saint John of Newfoundland, Canada by the Canadian ship Horizon Arctic.
Images captured by the CBC, the Canadian public broadcaster, show how the cranes of the Horizon Arctic unload fragments of the Titan in the port of San Juan de Newfoundland.
The vessel, which is operated by the same Canadian company that owns the Polar Prince (Titan’s mother ship), recovered the wreckage from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean using a remotely operated vehicle called the Odysseus.
According to a statement issued by Pelagic Research Services, the company that owns the Odysseus, offshore operations have been successfully completed and the Horizon Arctic demobilization process is currently underway after 10 days of work.
The images published by CBC show the bow of the submersible in good condition, a gray hemispherical structure with a small porthole that allowed the occupants to see the outside. However, it seems that the transparent piece that covered said eye has disappeared. Also, another piece of the Titan has been downloaded which appears to be a large section located at the rear.
The Titan was made of titanium and carbon fiber
Once the Horizon Arctic arrived at the pier in the port of Saint John, Newfoundland, a team of investigators from Canada’s Transportation Security Bureau (TSB) headed for the ship.
Both the TSB and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have begun investigations to determine the circumstances of the fatal crash.
The TSB, being the authority responsible for the mother ship of the submersible, has announced that it will carry out a safety investigation to analyze the circumstances of the operation carried out by the Polar Prince. For its part, the US Coast Guard has launched an official investigation to determine the causes of the implosion of the submersible.
Likewise, the United States Coast Guard announced on Sunday the start of another official investigation into the tragedy involving the loss of the submersible, with the aim of determining the causes of the event.
The person in charge of the investigation is Captain Jason Neubauer and explained at a press conference that the main objective is to prevent similar situations in the future and make recommendations to improve maritime security worldwide.
It was the Polar Prince ship that towed the Titan submersible with its five occupants from the port of San Juan de Newfoundland to the place in the Atlantic where it submerged about 600 kilometers to the southeast, right at the site where the remains of the Titanic rest.
According to the US authorities, the Polar Prince lost contact with the Titan on Sunday, June 18, less than 2 hours after starting its dive towards the Titanic. The Titan’s tragic accident resulted in the loss of all five of its occupants: Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and her 19-year-old son Suleman, British explorer Hamish Harding, French explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet, and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.
It is important to remember that OceanGate is an underwater exploration company that offers trips to the depths of the ocean, which represent an extraordinary experience for lovers of exploration and adventure who want to admire up close the beauty and diversity of marine life, as well as like exploring historic shipwrecks and other sites of archeological interest.
