In 2017, the Goodman Logistics Center in Marl, Germany, with an area of 235,000 m 2 , was inaugurated and set a new record as the company’s largest facility in Europe at that time. However, this same property will currently set another record, but this time by having the company’s largest rooftop photovoltaic installation in the world.
BayWare, a leading company in the field of renewable energy, will collaborate with Goodman to supply 18 MW of solar capacity. This capacity will be achieved through the installation of more than 43,000 solar panels in two of the Marl Logistics Center buildings. One of the buildings will have a capacity of 6 MW, while the other will have a capacity of 12 MW.
Metro Logistics, a German logistics services company ranging from sourcing and distribution to e-commerce logistics, operates these facilities. Once the installation is complete, the energy needs of the building and Metro Logistics will be given priority and any excess energy generated will be sold to the electric grid.
Opinions on the solar installation
Marie Maggiordomo, Director of Innovation and Sustainability at Goodman CE, notes: “With the goal of helping our customers reduce emissions and minimize dependency on the electricity grid, we continue to expand our clean power generation capacity. Incorporating solar PV capacity has become standard practice in all of our new construction, but it is also critical to retrofit our existing buildings to meet our sustainability goals and those of our clients. We have a great opportunity to take advantage of on-site renewable energy generation, especially in places like the Marl Logistics Center, which have large decks.”
Likewise, it states that “last year we committed to deploying 78 MW of additional solar photovoltaic capacity in our global portfolio, which brings us significantly closer to our goal of 400 MW by 2025. We are collaborating closely with Metro and BayWare to carry out carry out this important project, which represents approximately one third of our goal in Europe for this year.”
“The strategic location of this site reaches five million consumers within a one-hour drive. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in the efficient distribution of food and non-food products, both for Metro and its external customers throughout the German territory.”
“Armin Koeller, CEO of Metro Logistics, has expressed his approval of the installation of the photovoltaic system by Goodman, since this initiative contributes to Metro’s global sustainability strategy, which also includes the expansion of photovoltaic systems on the roofs of their own buildings. On most days, the solar installation is expected to meet the power needs of Metro Logistics’ multi-tenant warehouse in Marl.”
“Andrea Grotzke, BayWare’s Global Head of Energy Solutions, has highlighted the successful collaboration with Goodman at Marl, which is evidence of the fruitful and longstanding relationship between the two companies. In the past, we have supported Goodman in the implementation of several solar installations at large scale on roofs in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. This year, together we will reach the milestone of 24 projects installed, with a total capacity of 60 MW.”
“Large industrial and commercial real estate groups like Goodman are key in helping companies make the most of their large rooftop areas to generate renewable energy. We share the same vision for a sustainable future and already have our eyes on future PV projects. “
Construction of this sprawling solar facility is estimated to be complete by the end of 2023. This initiative further reinforces the sustainable commitment of Goodman’s Marl Logistics Center, which has been developed on revitalized brownfield land, in proximity to urban infrastructure, and has the distinction of the gold certificate awarded by the German Council for Sustainable Construction (DGNB for its acronym in German).
