Unither Bioelectronics(UB), a subsidiary of United Therapeutics Corporation, and Robinson Helicopter Company have signed a collaboration agreement to accelerate the development of hydrogen-powered helicopters based on Robinson’s R44 and R66 models.
Development of new hydrogen-powered helicopters
The collaboration between Unither Bioelectronics and Robinson Helicopter aims to develop hydrogen-powered helicopters and achieve certification of these aircraft by Transport Canada Civil Aviation(TCCA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration(FAA). Robinson Helicopter will bring its extensive technical and regulatory expertise to expedite the development and certification process for these innovative helicopters.
“We hope to use hydrogen protons to enhance our aircraft, much like mitochondrial power plants do in cells. It is an honor to work with Robinson Helicopter in our mission to save lives through the airlift of transplanted organs.”
Martine Rothblatt, Ph.D., chief executive officer of United Therapeutics.
The UTODS(United Therapeutics Organ Delivery System) project is a key initiative of Unither Bioelectronics that seeks to redefine organ delivery through the use of hydrogen-powered hydrogen and electric-powered vertical-lift aircraft. These aircraft are designed to operate from existing aerial infrastructures in hospitals, with the extensive advantages for vertical landing and take-off, which improves the speed and efficiency of organ transport.
Vice President of Program Management and Organ Delivery Systems at United Therapeutics, Mikael Cardinal, said, “Hydrogen-powered aircraft are the next frontier in sustainable aviation. We are committed to developing a fleet of aircraft with zero operational emissions and look forward to working with Robinson to achieve regulatory approval and production of these aircraft.”
Robinson Helicopter, known for its expertise in the vertical lift industry, is committed to innovation and sustainability in aviation. “This collaboration accelerates the advent of zero-emission helicopters,” said David Smith, president and CEO of Robinson Helicopter.“We are proud to deepen our relationship with Unither Bioelectronics to take hydrogen technology to the next level in aviation.”
