The Greenwater 01, recognized as the world’s largest electric container ship , has begun operating regularly between Shanghai and Nanjing, two major cities in China. This innovative vessel has been developed by China Ocean Shipping Group (Cosco) and stands out for its ability to save up to 3,900 kilograms of fuel per 100 nautical miles sailed.
The Greenwater 01, an ally for industries
The ship is equipped with a main battery that reaches 50,000 kWh , and there is the possibility of adding more battery boxes to extend its navigation capacity on longer journeys. These “energy boxes” are similar in size to a standard 20-foot container, and each contain about 1,600 kWh of electricity, and can be loaded directly onto the ship to increase its autonomy.
This system allows the Greenwater 01, with its 120 meters in length and 24 meters in width , to complete trips consuming up to 80,000 kWh of electricity. This in relation to a “traditional non-electric ship” would consume more than 15 tons of fuel to make the same journey.

With these characteristics, it is estimated that the Greenwater 01 will be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 2,918 tons annually , which is equivalent to removing approximately 2,035 family cars from circulation or planting around 160,000 trees.
