Odfjell and Bound4Blue collaborated closely to secure the completely autonomous, low-maintenance eSAIL system , which will seamlessly integrate into the vessel’s deck without interfering with its regular operations. This installation process was remarkably quick and efficient, completed in just two days.

Suction sail technology offers an effective solution for minimizing carbon emissions and contributes to the decarbonization of maritime transport. In fact, eSAILs are expected to help Odfjell achieve emissions reductions during its voyages by harnessing renewable wind energy to propel the vessel.

Captain Glenn Skjelbred and his crew have trained to understand how these sails affect the ship’s movements, allowing them to optimize maneuvers without compromising safety or maritime procedures. Additionally, the Bound4Blue team is on board to support and monitor sail performance during the maiden voyage, an experience that will serve as a foundation for future implementations of this technology on other Odfjell vessels.

Odfjell has been a leader in the maritime sector’s energy transition. The installation of eSAILs on the Bow Olympus is part of a broader effort to reduce the company’s carbon footprint, having achieved a 53% reduction in carbon intensity since 2008. With the eSAIL system, Odfjell will improve its environmental performance and be one step closer to meeting strict environmental regulations and market expectations.
