The Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that, with the contracting of two thousand megawatts of energy that will be installed between 2022 and 2026, the Dominican Republic will have for the first time a stable electrical system, with a real cold reserve and capable of withstanding the output of several plants for its maintenance.
The Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte, when interviewed on the McKinney program of Color Visión, stated that President Luis Abinader, as soon as he took office, assembled the electrical team to assess the situation in the sector. In the evaluation carried out, it was determined that the country did not have a cold reserve, for which the president immediately ordered tenders to contract two thousand megawatts, seeking to satisfy the demand and have a reserve that resists the output of two large plants.
“In electricity there is no short-cycle product, they are long-cycle products, they are products of two, three or four years, and what has to be evaluated is whether work is being done to solve the problem of blackouts definitively. And yes, we are working to solve it with the installation of two thousand megawatts between 2022 and 2026, which will guarantee a real cold reserve”, said the Minister.
He explained that in most Latin American countries the electrical system does not suffer blackouts with the output of two or three plants, because they have a cold reserve, capable of giving a quick response to any contingency and pointed out that, knowing this reality, they work so that the Dominican Republic has for the first time a cold reserve suitable to supply the energy of any plant that leaves the system.
Engineer Almonte also said that the 800-megawatt Manzanillo tender has already been awarded, plus an emergency 400-megawatt tender, whose plants will enter the system in October of this year, and another 800-megawatt natural gas-based plant. to be installed in different parts of the country, totaling two thousand megawatts.
“Our job in the electricity sector is not to discuss, it is not to offer, it is a job of transformation so that this country between 2025 and 2026 has a fully robust electrical system,” he said.
He added that the process of construction of electrical transmission lines has also begun to guarantee that this energy is sent to the different parts of the country efficiently and thus reduce losses in the transport of electricity to a minimum.
