The BOTTLE4FLEX project , promoted by AIMPLAS , Covinil and Eroski , is seeking development in the food packaging industry by creating 100% recyclable flexible skinpack packaging, based on and made from recycled PET ( rPET ).
The innovation and development of the BOTTLE4FLEX project
One of the biggest challenges in the flexible packaging and other plastics derivatives industry is the recycling of multi-layer materials, especially in the case of recycled PET, which has traditionally been difficult to process using conventional mechanical technologies. However, the BOTTLE4FLEX project is focused on overcoming these challenges through innovations in chemical recycling and the use of advanced polymerization technologies.
Although recycled PET ( rPET ) is one of the most widely used materials in the packaging industry, especially in rigid containers such as trays, its application in flexible packaging such as skinpacks has been limited by the properties of recycled materials. This project seeks to modify the properties of rPET to create a flexible monomaterial film with barrier properties and heat-sealing capacity, ideal for food packaging.
The project is focused on research into solvolysis processes, a chemical recycling technique that allows plastic materials to be broken down efficiently, and on modifying PET properties through partial depolymerization. In addition, the consortium plans to incorporate technologies such as reactive extrusion and the use of monomers and additives to increase the flexibility of recycled PET.
The BOTTLE4FLEX project is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the European Union, which finance the research through Next Generation EU funds within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. This public-private collaboration demonstrates the commitment of authorities and companies to the transition towards a more efficient circular economy.
