Fortescue Metals Group has taken a significant step towards decarbonizing its mining operations with its hydrogen truck in the Pilbara. This truck named “Europa” has travelled 1,100 kilometers from Perth and will now begin a series of trials in a real mining environment at the Christmas Creek mine.
Key tests for hydrogen truck in Pilbara
The Liebherr T 264 haul truck will be tested over the next few months to evaluate its performance under real-world conditions. The company plans to use the results of these tests to design its future fleet of zero-emission transport trucks. zero-emission haulage truckswhich are expected to start operating at its facilities from 2026.
Once the prototype is fully operational on site, it will be refueled with liquid hydrogen. liquid hydrogen from a plant located at Fortescue’s Green Energy Hub in Christmas Creek. This project is part of Fortescue’s broader collaboration with Liebherrwhere both companies are working to develop and validate an autonomous, zero-emission transportation solution.
Fortescue and Liebherr promote clean mining
It is fantastic that our prototype hydrogen-powered truck now joins its battery-electric equivalent, Roadrunner, on site. This is a crucial development in our partnership with Liebherr, and marks great progress in our commitment to reduce our carbon emissions.
