Tata Power boosts renewable energy in India with 4.3 GW solar plant in Tamil Nadu

Tata Power strengthens India's energy independence with new 4.3 GW plant, boosting solar production and workforce inclusion.

Tata Power, through its subsidiary TP Solar Ltd., has inaugurated its solar cell and module manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu. This new facility, with a capacity of 4.3 GW, is the largest of its kind in the country and represents a key step forward in India’s energy transition.

The plant, equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as TOPCon and Mono Perc, will enable the production of highly efficient solar modules to supply projects across the country. This initiative seeks to strengthen India’s energy independence and reduce dependence on imports in the solar sector.

On the other hand, Tata Power CEO and MD Praveer Sinha highlighted the importance of this infrastructure saying that the factory is a testimony of Tata Power’s commitment to a self-reliant and sustainable India and that in addition to driving innovation in renewable energy, it will generate employment and development opportunities in the region.

Economic and social impact in Tamil Nadu

Beyond technological advancement, the plant also has a significant social impact. 80% of its workforce is made up of women , promoting inclusion and professional development in the energy sector . In addition, investment in this infrastructure boosts the local economy and fosters industrial growth in the state.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru MK Stalin stressed the importance of this investment for the region. “This project reinforces our commitment to sustainable industrialisation and job creation. Tamil Nadu is consolidating its position as a key hub for the development of clean energy.”

A boost for the solar supply chain

With the new plant, TP Solar will not only supply its own ongoing projects, but will also seek to expand into the domestic and international markets. The Tirunelveli plant complements the existing plant in Bengaluru, which has been operating since 1992 with a capacity of 682 MW in solar modules and 530 MW in solar cells.
