Oil tanker fire in Johor Straits: Crew members safe

The fire on the Med Atlantic mobilized eight rescue vessels, but there were no injuries among the 22 crew members safely evacuated.

On 21 October 2024, a fire broke out in the engine room of the Malta-flagged tanker Med Atlantic while it was anchored in the Straits of East Johor, off Singapore. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) received the alert at 10:30 am, quickly deploying emergency resources.

The rescue operations involved one MPA patrol boat, two Police Coast Guard vessels, and three Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) firefighting vessels. Fortunately, all 22 crew members of the Med Atlantic were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported.

Although there was no disruption to maritime traffic , the MPA issued nautical advisories to keep other vessels away from the affected area. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is also closely monitoring the incident, recommending preventive measures to nearby fish farms to avoid possible side effects.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing as authorities assess the environmental impact and actions to be taken to prevent future incidents.
