Vattenfall has decided to temporarily halt development of the Kriegers Flak wind project, located about 30 km south of Trelleborg, Sweden. The decision, prompted by current unfavorable investment conditions, leaves the future of the project, which was expected to generate 2.7 TWh of electricity annually without fossil fuels.
Uncertain future for the Kriegers Flak wind power project
The Kriegers Flak project, considered the most advanced of its kind in Sweden, had received the construction permit in May 2022 for 35 to 50 wind turbines. construction permit in May 2022 to install between 35 and 50 wind turbines. However, the company has pointed out that the lack of a viable financial environment has made it impossible to go ahead. The company stresses the need for a suitable connection point to the national grid as a key requirement for resuming the project in the future, should conditions improve.
Although power production was planned for 2028, this target will no longer be possible. Vattenfall continues to work on other offshore wind projects in Sweden, hoping to contribute up to 18 TWh of clean electricity per year by 2035.
