The City of Sunderland is taking major steps towards the future of urban transport by incorporating Oxa ’s autonomous technology into its Sunderland Advanced Mobility Shuttle ( SAMS ) project. This programme aims to improve mobility in the city, connecting residents to key points of interest.

Oxa , a company recognized for its experience in autonomous vehicle solutions, will manage the technological integration of the project. Through a Ford E-Transit vehicle adapted with its advanced software platform, it will allow the deployment of self-driving buses that will operate safely in the most popular and complex urban areas.
Oxa CEO Gavin Jackson highlighted the importance of this effort: “We are proud to be part of the movement to radically modernise public transport in the UK. We are taking an innovative approach to delivering autonomy to customers and communities today, and we are excited to begin rolling it out in Sunderland.” “.
SAMS is a cornerstone in Sunderland’s transition to a smart city ecosystem. Councillor Michael Mordey, Leader of the City Council, said: “ This initiative is not just about testing new technologies, but about improving the quality of life for our residents by offering efficient and sustainable transport options. Oxa’s expertise in autonomous vehicle technology is central to our shared vision of creating a cutting-edge and sustainable transport system for the people of Sunderland. ”.
The project will explore the technical feasibility of autonomous buses, and gather feedback from passengers to fine-tune the experience and optimise the system. Backed by Innovate UK and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles ( CCAV ), the initiative aims to set a standard for efficient and sustainable urban mobility .
