On August 30, 2024, the second phase of CNOOC Jinwan Green Energy Port project was completed, which includes the construction of five liquefied natural gas(LNG) storage tanks, each with a capacity of 270,000 cubic meters. These tanks represent the largest LNG storage cluster in the world, and are the largest independently designed and constructed capacity tanks developed by China.

Completion of natural gas storage and transportation

These tanks are located in Gaolan Port, Jinwan District of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, and have been built to store up to 169 million cubic meters of natural gas. This project aims to improve LNG storage and supply capacity in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and southern China.

The development of storage tanks has been a highly complex technical challenge . The CNOOC team team overcame technological and safety limitations through innovations in several areas, such as structural stability, insulation and shock absorption. In addition, a completely independent construction system has been implemented and highly efficient construction and management methods, such as intelligent digital platforms and automatic welding, have been introduced to ensure safety and efficiency in their development.

With the completion of this second phase, the LNG processing capacity of Jinwan Green Energy Port of the Jinwan Green Energy Port doubles to 7 million tons per year. This improves gas supply capacity in southern China, and also strengthens the region’s energy infrastructure to ensure long-term supply in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao.
