Paralysis of the Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2 offshore wind farms
Leading Danish offshore wind company Orsted has announced its decision to abandon its plans for the Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2 offshore wind projects, which were located off the coast of Cape May County.
This determination comes after more than two years of intense opposition both in the legal field and in public opinion, led by Cape May County itself. The point of no return for Orsted appears to have been the filing of a large and unprecedented federal lawsuit challenging the permits granted by the federal government for the Ocean Wind 1 project.
“This is a great day for the Atlantic Ocean. This is a great day for whales and dolphins. The massive, reckless experiment known as Ocean Wind 1 has been stopped and Ocean Wind 2 abandoned.County Commission Director Leonard Desiderio said in a news release.
Orsted CEO Mads Nipper told investors that the company was abandoning plans related to the Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2 projects due to “Orsted has made the decision to cease development of the Ocean Wind 1 and 2 projects. Orsted has updated his view on certain assumptions, including tax credit monetization and the timing and likelihood of final construction permits.”.
If not for the actions taken by Cape May County, Orsted would have had a much more favorable path.
” Hundreds of thousands of acres of the Atlantic Ocean environment have been saved, as well as our local fishing and tourism economies ,” the statement said.
