SGT-400 turbine: the first that operates with hydrogen

According to information available on the HYFLEXPOWER project website, the paper packaging factory belonging to the company Smurfit Kappa, located in Saillat-sur-Vienne, France, has been selected as a test site for a project led by Siemens Energy .

Over several years, the HYFLEXPOWER project has focused on developing a solution that combines natural gas and hydrogen to improve the performance of a specific turbine known as SGT-400.

In 2022, they managed to operate the turbine using a mixture containing 30% hydrogen to power their engines. However, currently, the project has achieved significant progress.

Recently, those in charge of the project managed to make the innovative turbine at the French plant run exclusively on green hydrogen . This achievement represents a significant step towards the zero-emissions transition that is crucial for our planet.

As detailed in the publication mentioned in the previous paragraph, the project demonstrates how it is possible to obtain hydrogen from water and renewable energy, through the separation of hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Once the valuable hydrogen is obtained, it is compressed and stored for later use, either to power the aforementioned turbine or to inject it back into the electrical grid as a renewable energy source.
