The startup of this power plant represents a breakthrough

As reported by the state operator Korea Western Power (KOWEPO), South Korea has commissioned a power plant with the first domestically manufactured gas turbine.

The Gimpo combined cycle power plant, located west of Seoul, started operations on Friday last week. This plant is equipped with a 270-megawatt gas turbine, developed by local power plant equipment manufacturer Doosan Enerbility Co.

In 2019, the state power company, together with Doosan and other private companies, successfully developed the first domestically-made gas turbine after six years of effort. With this achievement, South Korea became the fifth nation in the world to have a large indigenous gas turbine , joining the United States, Japan, Germany, and Italy.

This was installed at the Gimpo plant in April last year and was tested for the first time in March 2023. After completing the necessary adjustments, combustion tests and other procedures, the Gimpo plant started commercial operations last week. This operation is expected to help ensure a stable power supply .

In addition, KOWEPO plans to develop a new generation of indigenous gas turbines and encourage the export of technology in this field.
