A solar farm in China was connected to the power grid

Recently, the world’ s largest solar farm, located in the desert of northwestern Xinjiang, was connected to China’s power grid. Located on the outskirts of Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, the 5 GW, 200,000-acre solar facility began operating on Monday, the state asset regulator’s website reported, citing China’s Power Construction Corp.

In terms of production, this huge solar farm will generate approximately 6.09 billion kWh of electricity per year. To put it in perspective, this amount of energy could power 2.03 million electric vehicles annually, considering that an average electric vehicle consumes about 3,000 kWh per year.

In addition, this facility is part of China’s ambitious baseload mega-project, which aims to install 455 GW of wind and solar and solar power in the country. These types of projects are located in areas with low population density and high resource availability and their generated energy is transferred to the main urban centers, mainly on the east coast of China.

The world’s largest solar parks

It is worth noting that China is already home to the three largest solar parks in the world in terms of capacity. In addition to this new facility in Xinjiang, the Ningxia Tenggeli and Golmud Wutumeiren solar parks, each with a capacity of 3 MW, are already in operation.

However, the Xinjiang region is also a crucial and sometimes controversial hub within the global solar industry. Apart from having large solar and wind farms, Xinjiang is a major producer of polysilicon, an essential raw material for the manufacture of solar panels.
