Flight automation specialist Skyryse announces the completion of the first fully automated hover helicopter takeoff. This event was achieved through the integration of SkyOS , an operating system developed by the company, which allows any pilot, regardless of their level of experience, to perform a perfect takeoff with just the swipe of a finger.
A new era for automated helicopter takeoff
In a procedure very similar to that of a self-parking car, Skyryse has demonstrated that automation technology can be successfully applied to fully compatible production aircraft. In the case of this flight, the helicopter did not use controls, but instead relied entirely on the technology embodied in the software, ensuring a perfect and stable flight.
Dr. Mark Groden, CEO of Skyryse, shared his excitement about this breakthrough: “Until today, helicopters have taken off using the same mechanical controls that Igor Sikorsky used 85 years ago. This new achievement marks a fundamental change in aviation, allowing anyone to operate a helicopter with the simplicity of a single finger. “.
In the past, the company had already carried out the first fully automated autorotation flight and the first with a single control system in the cockpit. However, this new development is significant because it was achieved on a fully functional, mass-produced helicopter, without the need for backup in traditional controls.
In parallel with these technological advances, Skyryse has intensified its collaboration with the United States Army to improve the operational capacity of its helicopters, including the Black Hawk . The implementation of the company’s technology will allow military pilots to train more quickly, improve interoperability between aircraft and increase safety by allowing simpler and more reliable flight control.
The partnership also includes the development of an optional piloting capability , meaning the helicopters could operate without a pilot on board, something that could change the way rescue and combat missions are carried out.
