Shell stops oil leak at its Singapore energy park in Bukom

On October 20, 2024, Shell reported an oil leak in one of its onshore pipelines at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore , located on Bukom Island. The leak was recorded at 5:30 am and was successfully controlled at 3:00 pm on the same day. Despite the incident, the company has confirmed that there was no impact on the park’s operations and no injuries were reported.

Shell manages to stop oil leak

Since the leak was detected, Shell has activated emergency response specialists and deployed containment booms and anti-pollution vessels to control the spill and minimize the environmental impact. An estimated 30 to 40 metric tons of sludge, a mixture of oil and water, spilled into the water channel between the islands of Bukom Besar and Kechil .

The company also said it is working closely with local authorities to increase the effectiveness of clean-up management activities. Dispersants have been used to break down the oil and speed up the environmental recovery process.

Shell has reaffirmed its commitment to the health and safety of its employees, as well as to protecting the environment. The company also thanked the authorities and the community for their collaboration in the rapid response to the incident, which prevented further damage to the coasts of Singapore.
