On November 15, 2024, Seabased, a leader in renewable ocean energy solutions, signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Grenada and SIDS DOCK. This agreement establishes the first large-scale wave energy park on the island , a significant step towards harnessing ocean resources and transitioning to a clean and sustainable energy source.
Seabased bets on wave energy
The agreement provides for a phased project, starting with a 2 MW pilot that will demonstrate the potential of wave energy to generate electricity in a predictable and environmentally friendly manner. This pilot will serve as a feasibility test and will open the door to expanding the park to 10 MW, creating a replicable model for other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) seeking sustainable energy solutions.
This Memorandum represents a commitment to harness the power of the oceans and transform that potential into tangible benefits for island communities.
Alan Barry, director of Seabased, said.
Commitment to sustainability and climate resilience
The Government of Grenada, for its part, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and climate resilience through this agreement. The Minister for Climate Resilience, Kerryne James, said that wave energy is a key pillar in the national strategy to ensure a secure and low -carbon energy future.
This agreement reflects our vision of using ocean resources to meet energy demands while contributing to sustainable economic growth.
He added.
Seabased ’s vision for Grenada is ambitious: to transform the island from an energy importer into an exporter , taking advantage of its abundant ocean environment. This project will benefit Grenada and serve as an example for other island nations striving to implement clean and sustainable energy solutions .
This project is an important step towards ensuring a more secure, sustainable and resilient energy future for Grenada, other Caribbean islands and beyond.
Said Laurent Albert, CEO of Seabased in conclusion.
