Scientists develop self-repairing asphalt with artificial intelligence and biomass

Self-healing asphalt technology is gaining significant momentum thanks to advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and the use of recycled biomass. This innovative solution seeks to transform road infrastructure , not only by reducing maintenance costs, but also by contributing to the sustainability of our roads.

How does self-healing asphalt work?

The concept of self-repairing asphalt sounds like something out of a futuristic movie, but researchers at Swansea University and King’s College London, in collaboration with scientists in Chile, are developing a self-repairing asphalt mix that uses biomass waste and artificial intelligence to autonomously heal cracks.

This type of asphalt benefits from one essential feature: its ability to heal itself when it detects a crack. As asphalt undergoes oxidation and hardens, the small cracks that form may, in the past, have meant costly repairs.

However, thanks to the incorporation of biodegradable spores loaded with recycled oils , asphalt can “heal” itself in less than an hour , eliminating the need for human intervention and significantly reducing operating costs.

Technological collaboration for a greener future

Collaboration between universities and the use of artificial intelligence, such as machine learning and atomistic simulations, is key to improving the design and performance of self-healing asphalt. Google Cloud is instrumental in this research, providing the computing infrastructure needed to simulate asphalt behavior and accelerate discoveries in the field.

Dr Jose Norambuena-Contreras, Professor of Civil Engineering at Swansea University, said this type of interdisciplinary research, combining engineering, chemistry and computer science expertise, put them at the forefront of innovation to achieve more durable and environmentally friendly roads.

What does it mean for the UK?

In the UK, potholes and cracks cost around £143.5m a year – a staggering figure when you consider the time and resources spent on repairs. This breakthrough could change the way road infrastructure is managed, making repairs quicker and less costly.

Investment in these solutions would also contribute to the government’s efforts to achieve zero carbon goals by 2050 , while strengthening the resilience of road infrastructure and improving driver safety.

The future of sustainable roads

Although self-healing asphalt is still in development, advances in research laboratories indicate that this approach has enormous potential.

If the road industry can adopt these new materials and technologies on a large scale, we could see a future where our roads are not only more durable, but also more sustainable and less expensive to maintain.
