Saipem completes main pipeline for Scarborough Project in Australia

Saipem has made crucial progress on the Scarborough Energy Project, one of the most significant offshore energy developments in Western Australia. With its flagship vessel Castorone, the company has completed the installation of the Scarborough pipeline , which will connect the gas field in the Carnarvon Basin to the onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing plant , known as Pluto.

The project, which took approximately 12 months, involved laying 433 km of gas pipeline at depths of up to 1,400 metres . This pipeline will transport natural gas from the ocean floor to the coast, where it will be transformed into LNG, a resource with lower carbon emissions and essential for global energy demand. The next step is pre-commissioning activities, a process that guarantees the pipeline’s operability before its full integration with the onshore terminal.

The Castorone , a 330-metre long specialist vessel equipped with advanced positioning and welding systems, has been key to the success of the operation. The vessel employs cutting-edge technology, including remotely operated underwater vehicles that facilitate the construction and maintenance of structures in ultra-deep waters. With this work, Saipem consolidates its leadership in complex marine engineering and its commitment to more sustainable energy solutions.

This project , led by Woodside as operator and in partnership with Scarborough Joint Venture, underlines Saipem’s ability to deliver high-profile projects in the offshore sector and marks a significant step in the provision of reliable energy for the liquefied natural gas market. The completion of this crucial phase underlines the role of subsea infrastructure in the transition to lower-emission energy sources, driving a more secure and sustainable global supply.
